Money Saving Tip - Wrapping Gifts

Today's great money saving tip is....

Wrapping Gifts:

Giving gifts isn't cheap. These days you can spend almost as
much on the wrapping paper and bows as you do on the present.

One way to save a little money is to create your own wrapping
paper, which is not only unique, but also fun. You can use simple
brown grocery bags or a roll of inexpensive craft paper with some
paint or markers to make your design. Better yet you can let your
kids do the designing , which will make it even more special and
they will have a blast.

Here is a quick idea for a boy's gift:

Using black and yellow paint or markers, create a miniature road.
Then dip a toy truck tires into red paint roll them along the paper
making tire tracks. You can then draw free hand a stop sign, yield
sign, or stop light. Next, using a hot glue gun, glue a couple of the
miniature trucks to the paper. Any young boy will be just as
thrilled with the wrapping as the actual gift.

For a girl, you can simply create miniature bows from existing
fabric or lace and glue them on brown paper then free hand
draw colorful flowers. Just use your creativity and look around for
items you already have on hand to use.

Money Saving Tip - Holiday Gifts

Today's great money saving tip is....

Holiday Gifts:

This tip is especially helpful for large families. Although it is fun
buying for and receiving from everyone, it can be very expensive.

When you budget is tight try make an agreement with your family
that you will continue to buy for the children, but that the adults
will go with a name exchange.

This way the children are not disappointed and you can spend
a little more on one or two people rather than spreading your
money thin. For the members that you did not pick to exchange
with, bake a loaf of their favorite homemade bread or cookies.

The holidays are about finding joy, while spending time with each
other. Focus on that and everyone will be happy!

EXTRA TIP This Holiday Season look for merchants
that have a "Layaway" plan.
There are several great reasons to use the
old-fashioned practice of putting merchandise aside and making
regular payments until everything is paid off. This is a
great way to do holiday shopping without building up credit
card balances thereby saving on debt interest. Check your
local stores for their policy, see if "SALE" merchandise
can be put in Layaway, how long you have to pay for the
merchandise and at what weekly payments. You won't need
the presents right away and this gives you a safe place
of storage out of prying eyes while enabling you to take
advantage of a special price and making payment without
interest.
Christmas Electric Savings Year after Year
Solar Christmas Lights
Solar Power Lights make holiday decorating safe and easy without plugging in cords outdoors! Solar panel charges in the sun to power lights up to 8 hours at night. Solar energy lights eliminate danger of fire. Highlight shrubs and door frames or walkways, patios, stairs year 'round! Lights can be set to"solid" or "flashing". LED bulbs never need replacing. 50-LED lights on 26' string. 100 LED lights on 39' string. 50 Bulb Solar String Lights

Money Saving Tip - Financial Counseling

Today's great money saving tip is....

Financial Counseling:

Many financial companies and even churches offer outstanding
classes on how to manage money. While some of these
programs are free, others may have a nominal fee of around $35
to attend but the money is well spent.

Another great option is consumer-counseling services. This is a
great option for people in over their head with debt. The
counselors will work directly with your creditors to lower your
balances, interest rate, and establish workable payments that you
can afford.

Money Saving Tip - Saving Money

Today's great money saving tip is....
Be Realistic:
When it comes to saving money, make sure the goals you set
for yourself are realistic. If you earn $50,000 a year, saving
$20,000 would be nice but it is very unrealistic.
Make your goals attainable or you will never save. When you first
start saving try setting a few short-term goals and work towards
them. After you have successfully reached your smaller goals you
can start planning for more long-term goals that will help you
reach your financial goals.

Money Saving Tip - Groceries

Today's great money saving tip is....

Groceries:

Just like when you are at the department store when you're in the
grocery store, look for the clearance rack and sales on items that
you really need.

Buy store brands or in bulk whenever you can. The old way of
thinking about store brands has changed as store brands have
become in most instances every bit as good as name brand items
and can save you extra money at check out.

Be sure to make a list before you enter the store and stick with
it rather than buying entirely on impulse. If you don't need
something simply don't put it in your cart.

Money Saving Tip - Budget

Today's great money saving tip is....

Budget:

Everyone should create a budget. If you are not sure how or
just not good with money, many businesses such as H&R Block,
offer free financial consulting to help you put a budget together.

Knowing where you are spending your money is by far the best
way to save. In most cases, people have no idea where their
money is really going and once they see it on paper, not only
are they surprised but eager to change their spending habits.

Extra Tip
You have to keep your money somewhere: A credit union can offer a desirable alternative to a bank.

For many using a bank results in frustration. Bank fees continue to tick up: Overdraft fees, monthly service charges and continually rising interest rates on credit card accounts mean that you pay more for letting the bank keep and use your money. You may want to go somewhere else, but where else is there?

Consider a credit union also known as a cooperative financial institution. Unlike banks, which are founded in order to make a profit, credit unions were originally founded to encourage thrift. They are non-profit organizations designed to help members. (This means that there are membership requirements, such as location, profession or particular financial situation.)
Every location has a credit union nearby, if your banking fees seem high don't wait until the pain is unbearable check into local credit unions now.

Money Saving Tip - Small Expenses

Today's great money saving tip is....

Small Expenses

Did you know that the average cup of coffee to go could easily
cost you twenty times what it would cost you to make it at home?

It is often the small daily expenses that add up and can really
surprise you. For instance, how much do you spend on the
morning or coffee you buy? Is it $2.50 or more? Let’s say you buy
one $2.50 coffee a day, that is $12.50 a week (5 days) and totals
50. 00 a month. That equals $600 a year spent on coffee.

What could you do with that extra money if you saved it, simple
by making your coffee at home?

What other “little pleasures” in your life are eating into your
pocketbook? Everyone has their own expenditures that could
easily be cut back on or even eliminated. Start doing the math and
you can see where you can keep your current lifestyle, cut back
and save quite a bit of money.

Money Saving Tip - Clearance

Today's great money saving tip is....

Clearance:

When you go into the store always head straight for the clearance
rack first. There you will be able to find amazing bargains on the
items you are looking for before you pay full price. Sometimes
you may have to dig a little to find the right item, but the savings
will be well-worth your time.

Most clearance racks offer variety, current trends, and great
value. Just be careful not to fill your basket with unnecessary
items just because they are a great deal. It could end up costing
you more than you originally planned to spend.

Harvey Akeson
harvey@harveyakeson.com
http://A1MoneySaver.blogspot.com

EXTRA TIP Looking to replace or buying something new, always check for "closeout", "damaged" or "display" items. Usually "one of a kind" items like those would not be found in the store ads. Many would carry the new sales warranty, and perform just as well as the new item.

Money Saving Tip-Credit Cards

Today's great money saving tip is....

Credit Card Interest:

If you have credit cards and your credit is in good standing, call
your credit card company, and ask for your interest rate to be
lowered.

It is truly that simple. Unfortunately, most people do not even
realize this is an option so they never make the call. Just tell
the representative that you want a better rate on your credit card
and they will take care of your request.

A simple five-minute phone call to your credit card issuer could
save you hundreds, even thousands, of dollars in interest charges.

It can't hurt to ask!

Money Saving Tip - Gifts

Today's great money saving tip is....

Gifts:

If you ask people if they prefer a store bought or handmade
gift, the majority would choose the latter. Handmade gifts
are individualized and come from the heart. When you have a
birthday, anniversary, baby shower, wedding, or Christmas
gift to give, make the gift.

For Christmas, you could make a beautiful ornament or door
wreath, for a baby shower you could purchase an inexpensive
bib pattern and make special bibs, or for a wedding, you could
create a wonderful album of photos showing the couples dating
life.

Other great options include making homemade hot chocolate,
soaps, candles, or lotions and placing them in inexpensive
glass containers or baskets purchased at a thrift shop. If
you use a mason jar, add foam and fabric under the lid for
added color, use a label to write the contents and a message
of endearment, and wrap a nice piece of ribbon around the
ridge.

If you get stuck for an idea just do a search online for hand made
gift ideas and you will find ideas for every occasion. The options
are endless, so get creative.

Money Saving Tip - Consume Less

Today's great money saving tip is....

Consume Less:

Let's face it...we live in a consumer society where waste is a huge
problem. If we could all use and consume less there would be less
waste, less power consumption, and the benefits for all of us
would be, we would save money!

There are so many simple things that you can do during the day to
consume less and save money. For instance; consider using less
shampoo when you wash your hair, this may not mean washing
your hair less effectively it means not flushing the excess shampoo
and money down the drain.

When it's chilly out side turn the thermostat down and put on
extra clothes. Turn off lights, the TV and the computer when they
aren't in use.

Each little thing you do will add up and enable you to save more
money and be good for our planet and the other people on it.

In addition some health benefits being available try finding some trails for hiking, beachcombing, camping, or low cost hobbies. While you are at it visit your local library get familar with what is available there. One time in the course of my answering questions I suggested to one of my clients she get on the computer to search for some information. This older lady said she didn't have a computer. I asked her about going to a local library for a computer to use. She said, "I never thought about it, but I have a library just around the corner from my house". I told her I bet there will be someone around that would be happy to help her get acquainted with the computer and even find something on the computer for her.

Money Saving Tip - Credit Cards

Today's great money saving tip is....

Credit Cards:

When it comes to using your credit cards it's important to be wise
and frugal. Although they are very convenient, credit cards are
dangerous and damaging when used unwisely. Try to use them
only when you absolutely have to.

Did you know that if you have a credit card that has a $1,000
balance and you pay only the minimum payment each month, it will
take you between 20 and 30 years to pay off that $1,000 balance,
because the majority of money is going strictly toward the
interest and not the principal amount?
