Thrift Stores
Here is a personal tidbit of my own experience and another reason in addition to finding great values at bargain prices at "thrift stores" you can find "out of date" treasures.

When my wife and I travel by car to our summer place four plus hours from our home in Tucson we like to listen to audio books. Over time our family members have collected a number of prized cassette tapes including several audio books. While our RV has a cassette player our new car has only a disc player.

We started shopping for a cassette player or boom box that we could plug into the car and listen to the many cassette tapes we had collected over the years. Lesson number one: just like not getting up to change channels on your television anymore, times have changed, cassette players are not that available today.

About our third stop looking for a reasonable priced answer to our problem, a kindly gentleman over-hearing our conversation suggested the possibility of finding our answer at a thrift store. What wasn't resolving our problem at our regular retail stores was found at a thrift store. A player for our "old fashion" cassette tapes.
Unfortunately, thrift and surplus stores have been given a bad rap.
Many of these stores are filled with hundreds of top quality items.
Name brand merchandise is easy to find but just like clearance
racks, it takes some time to find.

Find a thrift or surplus store close to where you live and then plan
spending some time to find those outstanding bargains. Thrift
stores sell brand name clothes for only a few dollars. Just
imagine your joy when you get a Liz Claiborne suit for $5.99 or a
set of Callaway Golf clubs for $25.00. Not only is it fun to find a
great bargain and a creative way to save money, it is also a good
way to practice recycling!

At the same time we need to be aware of a few "tricks" or practices that trap consumers into making bad choices when buying.

Zero Interest Rate...is No Bargain if too much is paid for an item.
Research has shown when people are paying in Cash as opposed
to credit with zero interest rate they tend to spend less and are
more cautious of price. Watch and be very careful of meeting
all the terms of a zero interest purchase or you will end up
with a higher price and penalties that are more than what the
interest would have been if purchased on credit.
It's like being late on a credit card payment with a huge
penalty and an increase in the interest rate on the remaining balances.

Manufacturers' Rebates lure buyers to certain brands
and most often are the deciding factor in making purchases.
Studies show less than half of all rebates are successfully redeemed.
One clever little trick is manipulating redemption dates, "claiming
the rebate 15 days or more after the purchase and then with a
rebate window of 10-14 days".
Another method of creating "slippage" of rebate dollars is sending
the rebate checks in envelopes specially designed to look like
"junk mail". Many bulk pieces of advertising are discarded without
opening.

E-Bay Auctions maybe a great place to find an
oddball or needed item, but auctions actually encourage overpayments.
Look for items to compare that quote a fixed price. If you do bid
don't exceed a fixed price. Forget the auction and buy at the
set price.

Smart Shopping Includes Checking prices for incorrectly
programed store scans at checkout registers. Remember when you are shopping take a marking pencil or colored sticker to mark special shelve marked prices or other specials. It will make it easier to watch the price on the cash register screen at checkout.

you really need.

Buy store brands or in bulk whenever you can. The old way of
thinking about store brands has changed as store brands have
become in most instances every bit as good as name brand items

Be sure to make a list before you enter the store and stick with
it rather than buying entirely on impulse. If you don't need
something simply don't put it in your cart.

Pay Yourself First.

Savings should be your priority, so don’t just tell yourself that you
are going to save whatever is left over at the end of the month.

Make it a rule to deposit savings into an account as soon as you
get paid. An easy, effective way to start saving is to simply
deposit 10% of every paycheck in a savings account.

For instance if your paycheck is 710.00, deposit 71.00 of that
directly to your savings account. If your check is automatically
deposited you can set it up through your bank so that a specific
amount goes directly to savings. This works well and requires little
thought; over several years, you've a tidy sum in savings. Over
decades, you'll be a millionaire.

You will be amazed at how much you can stretch your monthly
budget simply by reusing and recycling many items you would
normally just throw away.

When you do your shopping, look for items that can be reused.
Rechargeable batteries are a perfect example. Even though the
initial purchase may be more than non-rechargeable batteries,
there is a definite savings over a long period.

Here is another one that you may not have thought of. After your
fabric softener sheets have gone through the dryer, don't throw
them away, you can use them for dusting. They work great!

Recycling takes a little extra time, but there are many ways that
you can combine recycling and saving money. Just do a quick
search for "save money recycling" and you will find hundreds of
great tips that will save you money and help the environment too!

It is important to have an understanding of where your money
goes. Keep a journal where you can see your successes when it
comes to saving money. This can be a bit challenging and takes
time to learn, but it's worth it. By keeping a list of the ways you
have saved money in front of you, you will be more encouraged to
keep going. These successes can be small or large.

For example, if you normally buy your lunch, costing you from
$5.00 to $7.00 per day and one week straight you packed your
own lunch for $3.00 per day that is a success. If you wanted to
buy a new pair of shoes, but held off until it went on sale, saving
50%, that is another success.

Saving money requires some investigative skills, desire,
determination, and creativity. Once you get in the habit of saving
money, you will feel better about yourself and enjoy life much
more without debt hanging over your head!

offers some outstanding programs for folks.
First off the Golden Age Passports for those 62 years and older offers permanent benefits to the holders. The entrance to any National Park should have the current details on cost and benefits. Another lesser known pass is the Golden Access Passport for Blind or Permanently disabled persons.

Be Flexible:

You've worked hard, set your goals for saving and you are sticking
to it, that's great! But you must realize that things can and will
change and you must be ready for that. The secret is learning
ways to be flexible.

Let's say you normally save $150 a month, when something
unexpected happens and you have to dip into the money that you
would normally save. It's important not to get discouraged when
this happens.

Do your best to put away at least a little bit of the money you
were planning to save away even if it's only $50, $25 or as
little as $5 that month. This will keep you in the habit of saving
and then you can focus on getting back on track next month.

store, make a list and stick with it. Plan your meals in advance so

online for the best travel deals on flights, rental cars and hotel.
Sometimes you will get an even better deal if you book everything
you need all at one time. If you are going to a resort or theme
park be sure check out the meal plans, they can sometimes save
you more than 30% on your food costs. Heading out with no set
direction will certainly lead you to impulsive spending.

Plan to cut expenses wherever you can and lower expenses in
other areas. Totally eliminating something often saves a lot of
money. Cutting back may save even more.

Have Patience:

It's important to be patient when it comes to saving. If you have

means that you have to accept that it will take time and good
planning to save

Be patient and remember that just because you want something
doesn't mean that you have to rush to buy just to satisfy your urge.

Before you buy anything shop around and compare it with other
things. Wait for sales in order to get the best price and call before
you go to the store to make sure they have what your looking
for in stock. This will save you more money by not wasting gas
on a pointless trip. Remember the 30 day rule!

quantities between you. If you are single, you might go in with
friends or neighbors on certain bulk items.

Especially when it comes to purchasing non-perishable items.

Here are some great items you may want to purchase an bulk.
They include gift cards, toothbrushes, paper goods, cell phone
minutes, blank DVDs, light bulbs and certain cleaning supplies.

Just be careful not to load up your cart with non-essential items,
even when you're tempted with a fantastic deal and you will be
sure to save a bundle at your local warehouse club.

encouraged to keep saving for the intermediate and long-term
goals.

Wrapping Gifts:

Giving gifts isn't cheap. These days you can spend almost as
much on the wrapping paper and bows as you do on the present.

One way to save a little money is to create your own wrapping
paper, which is not only unique, but also fun. You can use simple
brown grocery bags or a roll of inexpensive craft paper with some
paint or markers to make your design. Better yet you can let your
kids do the designing , which will make it even more special and
they will have a blast.

Here is a quick idea for a boy's gift:

Using black and yellow paint or markers, create a miniature road.
Then dip a toy truck tires into red paint roll them along the paper
making tire tracks. You can then draw free hand a stop sign, yield
sign, or stop light. Next, using a hot glue gun, glue a couple of the
miniature trucks to the paper. Any young boy will be just as
thrilled with the wrapping as the actual gift.

For a girl, you can simply create miniature bows from existing
fabric or lace and glue them on brown paper then free hand
draw colorful flowers. Just use your creativity and look around for
items you already have on hand to use.

gift, the majority would choose the latter. Handmade gifts
are individualized and come from the heart. When you have a
birthday, anniversary, baby shower, wedding, or Christmas
gift to give, make the gift.

For Christmas, you could make a beautiful ornament or door
wreath, for a baby shower you could purchase an inexpensive
bib pattern and make special bibs, or for a wedding, you could
create a wonderful album of photos showing the couples dating
life.

Other great options include making homemade hot chocolate,
soaps, candles, or lotions and placing them in inexpensive
glass containers or baskets purchased at a thrift shop. If
you use a mason jar, add foam and fabric under the lid for
added color, use a label to write the contents and a message
of endearment, and wrap a nice piece of ribbon around the
ridge.

If you get stuck for an idea just do a search online for hand made
gift ideas and you will find ideas for every occasion. The options
are endless, so get creative.

Make a list of the 10 most important things in your life. Rank them
in order of importance. The purpose of this exercise is to help you
see the things you consider the most and least important and to
provide you with a visual of why you need to save.

Some examples of things that a person might put on their list
include:

-Buying a new home.
-Getting a new car.
-Taking a special trip.
-Planning for your retirement.
-Stating an emergency fund
-Starting a business.
-Paying off your debts.
-College fund for your children.
-Buying your dream boat.
-Planning the perfect wedding.

Once you have a list made it will help keep you focused.
If you go off track take another look at your list to remind yourself
why it is important that you stick with your savings plan.

Another good candidate list is a to do list.
Make list of things you need to get accomplished. Once you
have your list and see things you feel need to be done, number
them A-B-C. A's of course the most important and top priority.
Now take all your B's and C's and set aside for now.

Do a feel-good exercise, take a one of the very easiest
A tasks and complete it. Think of your list as a things to
do list for today and start putting holes in that
list like a piece of Swiss cheese. Doing a few of the simple tasks
first starts to shorten the list and as your list becomes shorter
the things to do start to look a lot less formidable.

After you finish your A list you can go back pick up your
B's and C's making a brand new list. Start putting holes in
the list again. Just sitting back thinking about all the things
you have to do won't get them done and it will seem like
a insurmountable burden. Breaking things down and starting with
some easy tasks first you start working on them rather than
just looking at what needs to be done and not knowing where
to start. Try it.

I told her I bet there will be someone around that would be happy to help her get acquainted with the computer and even find something on the computer for her.
